Wilkie Estate Organic Wines is a small family-owned winery on the Adelaide Plains that produces organic Cabernet Merlot and Verdehlo.

Total annual production is just 2000 cases, which are mostly exported to the UK, Belgium and Japan. However, you can purchase these luscious wines locally at the Market, or through organic stores and restaurants.

Trevor Spurr, with his stepfather Bernie Wilkie established Wilkie Estate in 1978. In the early 1990s Trevor converted the property to organic farming methods and it was certified organic by Biological Farmers of Australia in 1998.

This 6 hectare property produces 3 hectares of Cabernet Sauvigon, half a hectare of Merlot and 2.5 hectares of Verdehlo.

The Cabernet Merlot is a medium-bodied dry red wine, aged in American and French oak for a minimum of 18 months. It is then cellared for release 2 to 3 years later. It has a dusty, ripe red fruit character that lingers on the back palate.

The Cabernet Merlot has an alcohol content of 14.5% and it is an excellent food match with pasta dishes and casseroles.

The Verdehlo is an aromatic dry white wine with passionfruit and tropical fruit characters. It has an alcohol content of 13.5%.

You could match this wine with spicy Asian dishes or summer salads.

Both wines have minimal sulphur added, usually about one third of conventional wine, to aid in cellaring.

Once the grapes are harvested they are processed under certification in the Barossa Valley by Barossa Vintners.
