Tanunda, located in the heart of the Barossa Valley, has a strong German heritage which is kept alive in part, through the culinary tradition of Steiny’s Smallgoods.
Established in the late 1980s by Stein Bourner, Steiny’s is a maker and purveyor of fine old fashioned, quality smallgoods.
Steiny’s Smallgoods still uses wood fires of mallee stumps and sawdust to create a traditional smoking process and for use in its cooking ovens.
Taken over by the Noth Family in September 1999, Steiny’s products are all low in fat and the mettwurst is gluten free.
The mettwurst takes one week to process using the traditional fermentation method, and includes marinating and seasoning with spices and herbs.
Only top quality meat, herbs and spices are used, with a minimum of 85% lean beef and pork.
Quality assurance is maintained from the time the meat arrives to be processed to when the final products are dispatched, with strict procedures enforced and stringent laboratory tests conducted on a regular basis to ensure the product is of a consistently high quality.
Steiny’s Smallgoods’ main line is their 40 gram range of mettwurst sticks. They now produce 4 to 5 thousand sticks every week.
