Rosemary Bruhn and Keith Holden run Rosie’s Free Range Eggs in Eudunda on the edge of the Barossa, farming an average of 4000 chooks.

Rosie and Keith love working with chooks. Their Rhode Island Red crossed with New Hampshire breed are good layers, quiet and very friendly.

“It’s a good life,” says Keith. “The chooks tear out the shed first thing in the morning and run around their outdoor compound before laying. Then they camp till the afternoon before heading out to have another scratch.”

Eggs are collected daily, and then rested for 12 hours in a cool room before being graded into seven different weights. The grading helps pick out imperfect eggs such as cracked shells which don’t make it to Market. By the time an egg gets to the Market its 2 days fresh!

The chooks are locked up overnight due to foxes, but are left free to range in the shed overnight. They have perches to keep them off the ground and a deep litter/sawdust floor is used as insulation for temperature control. On hot days an overhead mist is switched on to cool the shed 10 degrees in 10 minutes. It’s so fine the mist doesn’t wet the ground but cools the air in the shed.

An animal nutritionist compiles feed recipes according to the quality of the wheat (bought from local producers), and the season.

There is also fresh running water and auto feeders in the shed which all goes to help make these hand-collected, graded and packed eggs taste so wonderful!
