Kuitpo Forest Strawberries’ 12 hectares is heaven for those in love with this lush sweet fruit.
Located in Kuitpo, Kuitpo Forest Strawberries is managed by Brenton and Vanessa Sherry, with their three children – Adam 22, Megan 19 and Ryan 15. Their children’s interest in the business includes the boys studying horticulture and Megan studying business management at TAFE.
The Sherry’s grow 750,000 strawberry plants mainly of the Albion variety; a soft, sweet and disease-resistant fruit which Adam and Ryan sell at the Market.
There are hundreds of strawberry varieties and Kuitpo Forest Strawberries conduct national trials on some of them on their farm. The results are reported back to the Strawberries Australia Board to work out which ones best suit particular climates.
Kuitpo Forest Strawberries has a strong land management protocol. After a season, they rest an area for 2 years before planting a cover crop which is then slashed in to feed the soil.
Bore and dam water is drip delivered to the plants, and natural predators are utilised on mites and thrips that attack the plants and flowers.
Brenton and Vanessa take pride in the quality of their fruit which is independently audited to ensure no chemical residue.
Kuitpo Forest Strawberries are sold Australia wide into supermarket chains, but they also sell at the Willunga and Victor Harbor Farmers Markets. “It’s good to have that personal contact with customers,” says Vanessa.
