Adelaide Showground Farmers Market Issue 62, January 2012

Issue 62, January 2012

Summer entertaining, by CEO, Amanda Daniel

What is your New Years resolution? If you have resolved to be fit and healthy in 2012 Year of The Farmer then we can help you. A membership to the Market guarantees you 10% off every purchase for the year, providing you with the ability to buy ethical food from your rural community.  Memberships are now due for renewal.

If you are lucky, you are still on holidays and if not, you can make it feel like you are by sipping SA wine and grazing on platters of local tomato, prosciutto and goats curd.

Summer seasonal fruit and veg are in full swing at the Market, making it so easy to entertain friends. Have casual BBQs, a picnic lunch on the veranda, hampers on the beach at sunset - any excuse will do!

Super fresh, local salad vegetables need little preparation and are great for a healthy waistline and a fit family. The food at this Market is sold by the people who grow it, ensuring it comes from nearby and contains maximum nutritional value. Berries and fruit are an instant dessert with a splash of SA dairy or get experimental and throw them into salads with savoury seasoning and splashes of SA extra virgin oil.  Seasonal local raw product has not been in storage for long periods so it tastes great. Spend more time on the entertaining side of summer and less time in the kitchen.

The Farmer and Chef Kitchen demonstrations will give you a few tips on how to make the most out of the local produce. Get your ethical coffee and settle in to your seat at the Demo Kitchen at the Market at 11am for the free Farmer and Chef cooking show.

Looking forward to sharing a dynamic diet of South Australian food with you this year.

Wishing you a sustainable New Year.

Amanda

Masterchef runner-up Michael Weldon cooks in the Demo Kitchen, Sunday 8 January

The runner-up of Masterchef 2011, Michael Weldon, will be cooking at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market kitchen on Sunday 8 January
The runner-up of Masterchef 2011, Michael Weldon, will be cooking at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market kitchen on Sunday 8 January

This Sunday is the first Market of 2012 and all the regular stallholder will be there with plenty of fresh produce.  We are also excited to have the Masterchef 2011 runner up Michael Weldon joining our kitchen host Rebecca Sullivan in the demo kitchen this Sunday at 11am.  Michael will be showing us how to do what he does best, cook straight from the garden and using the freshest, seasonal produce including some fish from Coorong Wild Seafood.

Michael has been a long time lover of food.  Michael fully realised his passion for cooking when he and a group friends began having dinner parties in their early twenties, where Weldon was the self-appointed head chef.

It may seem like a big step between cooking home dinner parties to competing in Australia’s 2011 series of Masterchef, but it is one Michael took in his usual relaxed stride.  Michael entered Masterchef after being dared by a close friend to give it a shot and ended up Michael was the runner up of the 2011 series.  Over the six month Masterchef rollercoaster, cooking took over Michael's world and fast became his obsession. Little by little, and with the help of some amazing experiences on the show, Michael's thirst for food knowledge has grown and fuelled a desire to turn his culinary curiosity into a career.

It's time to renew your ASFM membership!

2012 Membership of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market

Thank you for your support of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market in 2011.  This is just to remind you that it is time to renew your membership.  If you want to continue to receive the benefits of being a member of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market, you need to renew by 31 January 2011.

Many members have asked us why they need to fill out the whole membership form when they are renewing their membership and we have their details on file already.  Unfortunately when we send out communications such as notification of the AGM or the monthly Digest, we receive many emails that bounce because the email address we have on file is no longer valid.  We also receive some of the hard copies of the AGM information returned to us from Australia Post because people have moved house and forgotten to give us up to date addresses.  We appreciate your patience in filling out the information and dealing with the large volume of people at the Information tent in January.

Ways to renew your membership

• In person at the Market on Sunday (payment by cash or credit card)

In January the Information Tent at the Market gets extremely busy.  We are trialling ways to improve the flow of people and appreciate your assistance during this time.  In order to assist you in renewing as quickly as possible, you can download your renewal form here. Print and fill in the form at home and bring to the Information tent at the Market to save time.

When paying in person, paying by cash will also speed up the process.

• By fax or email (payment by credit card only) - avoid the queues!

You can also add your credit card details and scan and email your form to admin(at)asfm.org.au and we will process your renewal during the week.

Alternatively you can fax your renewal form to (08) 8231 8518 for processing or post to ASFM Inc, PO Box 38, Goodwood SA 5034. You can then pick up your membership card and credit card receipt from the Information tent at the Market on Sunday.

Here's a reminder of why you should continue to shop with us and the benefits of being a member of the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market.

We hope you will continue to shop and enjoy the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market.

The Farmer and Chef cooking show

The Market kitchen is now the main stage for Market produce. Straight after the Kids’ Club Holiday Fun sessions at 10am, our chefs and guest chefs will be showing you how to use, prepare, store, and entertain with seasonal produce.

Chefs and all round great cooks will be teaming up with our SA Farmers for you to hear the story behind the food. Find out how the food was grown, what region it comes from, how it has evolved and how it has become the life of the grower. Get to know more about the people who grow your food. This Market epitomises the ideals of provincial eating; a lifestyle choice where you know your food, from the paddock to the plate.

This month the kitchen focuses on Summer Entertaining - recipes will be posted here during the week after the Market.  Keep an eye on our Facebook page for notification!

New and returning stallholders

In January we welcome one new stallholder to the Market and welcome back another two seasonal stallholders.

Hughsli

Hughsli's range of ingredients

In January we welcome Hugh Flint to the Market with his stall, Hughsli.  As a trained chef, Hugh saw an opening in the market for locally-sourced muesli, flavoured nuts and cereal bars and he started up a small food business called Hughsli.  Hugh uses produce from the Market such as Cooinda's apricots and McLaren Vale Orchard's seedless dried muscatel.

"I focus a lot of my attention on sourcing the best and freshest grains, nuts, spices and dried fruits available, preferably from the producer themselves. I use simple methods of cookery and undertake them with delicacy and finesse to simply enhance the flavour of the raw products.  I keep my labelling down to earth and simple, allowing the product to speak for itself. A clear, straight to the point, list of ingredients is featured on each packet or jar, pointing out the origin of as many ingredients as possible. I use packaging that will keep my products at their peak for the longest time while also allowing to show-off the contents."

Hughsli joins us at the Market from mid January - check back on our website to find out where he will be located and pop over and say hello!

What's HOT this month – Gardening, lettuces, eggplant, grapes, summer wine, juice

The crew from Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs
The crew from Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs

Gardening - January is a great time to get the garden back into shape. And what better way than making use of your kids to do it for you! Bring your children to the Kids' Club on Sunday 8 January to learn about weeding and worm farms. Check out seedlings at Bickleigh Vale Farm (site 85), Hillside Herbs (site 88) and Gooseberry Hill Farm (site 63).

Lettuces - great for summer salads and lots of varieties are available right now from Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs (site 95-96), Patlin Gardens (site 75-76), Alnda Farms (site 84), Aay's Fresh Herbs (site 92), N&M Tsimiklis (site 56-58) and Bickleigh Vale Farm (site 85).

Eggplant - N&M Tsimiklis (site 56-58) are overflowing with eggplant! Virgara's Garden (site 52-53) and Aay's Fresh Herbs (site 92) and Hart's Vegetables (site 80-81)  also have eggplant.

Grapes are now in season and available from returning stallholders Gerry Bariamis (site 82) and Berri Delicious Creations (new summer fruits aisle).

Summer wine.  Howard Vineyard (site 29) have a lovely Unoaked Chardonnay, as well as Sauvignon Blanc and red and white Sparking wine. Thye also have a rose, perfect for summer parties and entertaining, or just sipping while relaxing.  Wild Fox Wines (site 5) have organic chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and rose. These wines are also available preservative-free. WIld Fox also have a delicious 2009 sparkling red which they describe as "a deep red with purple hues, and dark berry and raspberry fruit aromas on the nose." Just because New Year's eve was last week doesn't mean you have to stop drinking the bubbly!

Juice from Mountain Fresh Fruit Juices (site 17). Trevor has an apple and guava juice which is perfect to quench your thirst on a hot summer's day and we hear that the apple lemon juice has a lovely gingery flavour.

Producer of the Month – N&M Tsimiklis

Lebanese eggfruit from N&M Tsimiklis
Lebanese eggfruit from N&M Tsimiklis

Find N&M Tsimiklis at the Market at site 56-58

Meri Tsimiklis is the “M” behind stallholder N&M Tsimiklis.  Meri and her husband Nick have sold their fresh produce at the Market since it opened. We spoke to Meri about their farm in Virginia and their produce.

The tomato is by far their most popular line, however the Tsimiklis’ also sell gourmet lines such as the Lebanese eggfruit and the Lebanese (white) zucchini.

“I’ve got Europeans that come here constantly and they want the finger size so they can stuff them.  They’ll pay up to $40 a box. It’s time consuming - you have to pick them every day.”

At the moment Meri said she is overflowing with Lebanese eggfruit, a long skinny variety called Anatalie, which she will be selling for $2.99 a bag (normally up to $8).  She said stuffed eggfruit is a popular Turkish dish and it can be stuffed with rice or herbs or anything you want.   And her tip for Mums and Dads is that “you can hide all your veggies coz kids don’t know what’s in it.”

The good news for members is that this weekend, N&M Tsimiklis will have a lot of produce on special.

“Because we are overflowing with produce, this weekend I’ll have lots of products going for $1.99 – we’ll have tomatoes, Lebanese cucumbers and zucchini in every colour,” she said.

N&M Tsimiklis have three properties and Meri shares a farm with her brother Paul, who is also a keen farmer.  Meri said that as a third generation farmer, fruit and vegetables are in her blood.

“From an early age I was on the property and that’s where I grew up,” she said. ““I know Mum and Dad’s parents did the same in Greece – farming – and everything they did was of the land. Without my Mum I couldn’t do this on my own. The Okra (lady finger) is actually Mum’s line.  At 76 she still has the passion for growing veggies and herbs.”

Meri said that she has regular customers who come at 9am each week to buy the Okra, which is in limited supply.  She said her Mum is also responsible for the figs and herbs.

“Along with her amazing large figs, she also grows basil , mint , coriander and rocket.  Mum has her special way with producing pickled green spicy olives and the everyday Kalamata olive too,” she said.

With figs now in season, Meri said that a lot of the trees that they have on the farm as very old but still “produce really well because they’re looked after.”

The family also have a number of animals out the back of the property with the veggies that haven’t sold.

“The free range eggs we use at home are from the never-ending chickens that roam the farm which are Dad’s pride and joy,” she said.

But Nick and Meri do the large proportion of the work on the farm, with Meri saying she works seven days a week and doesn’t get much sleep.

“I don’t stop,” said Meri, “I am lucky in a self-employed way  - you basically get up when you want. If you have to get up early, you get up, but I’ve also got the kids - a four year old and a 15 year old. There’s a lot of running around between the work I do.  My work days are 12 hours spread over a longer day. I don’t get much sleep but it’s always happening. If I’m at the work shed I get a lot of people that come past and buy here as well.”

And although she has lost her Sundays to the Market, Meri said the Market has still made her life easier.

“I used to have over 70 glasshouses selling to agents and it was hard to deal with them all,” she said. ”But I couldn’t do it without my husband Nick. He is like Mr Mum, he cooks and helps take care of our youngest son.  He works on the farm too.”

She said that the whole family has worked at the Market, including her daughter who is now married and her elder son who is now 15.

“Our son Nicholas is a Market baby,” she said, “He was born in the first year of the Market and I would put him in the work bin at the stall and all the customers knew him. Later we called it Nicholas’ play bin and he still knows the Market.”
