Gooseberry Hill Farm is 40ha of undulating hills at Meadows, with most of the land used to graze sheep and produce hay, but a portion is dedicated to growing flowers, potted herbs and vegetable seedlings which are sold at the Market every week.
“We grow ‘em and love ‘em,” says Geoff Page of his traditional-type flowers, “and provide advice on how to grow and look after the rest.”
The flowers come in a colourful and large range with availability depending on the season, but proteas dominate the winter season.
The flowering bulbs include Daffodils, Jonquils, Freesias, Ranunculus, Belladonnas, Dutch and Spuria Irises, Calla (Zantedeschia), Arab’s Eyes, Christmas and Pineapple Lilies. Bulbs from these are sold when the plants are dormant.
Other cut flowers are the sunflowers, Gomphrena, Bells of Ireland, Alstroemeria and many more.
Mushroom compost is used on the flowers, along with drip irrigation.
The certified-organic potted herbs are hand watered using rain water and include a range of mints, thymes, parsleys and basils, oregano, lemon grass, sage, rosemary, dill, horseradish, comfrey, borage.
The choice of certified-organic vegetable seedlings depends on the season but there are always colourful and unusual plants on hand.
