Chocoholics are known to go into withdrawals without their weekly fix of Sonia Brown’s tantalising treats.
Chocoholics Synonymous’ most popular line is the creamy, soft and luscious vanilla slice which uses Fleurieu cream and the Danishes and croissants which are fresh-baked on Sunday morning.
The gourmet pie range has venison, curried kid, chicken or beef in red wine, beef goulash or rabbit. Quiches include the infamous blue cheese and caramelised onion and sausage rolls are filled with tasty garlicky beef, spicy chicken or pork with sage and onion.
As Sonia says, “we don’t do anything plain.”
From her Newton bakery Sonia prepares gluten-free delights such as muffins, slices, tarts, chocolate éclairs and a strawberry cream puff.
Only the best Belgium callebaut chocolate is used with a range of fillings - ganache, praline, fondant or liquors. Distinctive purple, red, green or gold coloured chocolate shoes stand out for that unusual gift. They are strawberry, orange, caramel or lime flavoured, and come in white milk or dark chocolate.
Sonia started cake decorating classes at 14 years of age. By her early 20s she was fully-fledged into the trade at the Melbourne Hilton International with French, Austrian and German colleagues from whom she received excellent training in making European sweets.
By 1982 Sonia was back in Adelaide with her own shop which mostly wholesaled, with very little retail until 2007 when the Market started.
“The Market is fabulous,” says Sonia, “because I’m in production at the shop all the time it’s difficult to stop and chat to clients, but at the Market I get immediate feedback.”
