What’s Good to Eat and Plant Now?

Eat: Warming winter foods

Winter is all about comfort food. Caulies and broccoli are some of the best vegies available now and you’ll find some super stuff at the Market.

A good old fashioned favourite is cauliflower cheese. Smother some steamed cauliflower with cheese sauce and grated cheese on top. Let it melt and get a lovely golden colour in the oven.

The fancy pants name for this method of cooking cauliflower is gratin. Gratin is simply a french word that translates as golden crisp and crusty.

Download the recipe here. Thanks to the Go for 2&5 website.

Plant: Bare-rooted deciduous fruit trees, citrus, winter greens, peas, beans, herbs and strawberries

In winter deciduous fruit trees are leafless and dormant and it’s a good time to buy them. Plant apple, pear, plum, apricot, peach, cherry and nectarine trees now.

Nothing tastes better than ripe fruit from your own tree! Prepare the hole well and if you’d like some cow poo talk to Najobe Park Beef.

Matt from SA Composters is a wealth of information and has some great gardening tips! Look out for him at the Market on the first Sunday of every month.

Jump into our Edible Garden for the buzz on what to plant in your garden this month.

Next Sunday 8 August – Culinary Magic

In the lab with Lee Harrison's Mobile Science Education

We're looking at some chooky stuff. How much science do you think you can find in a chicken’s liver, a wing, some paper and hair bleach?

  • Enzyme action
  • Muscle pairs
  • Joints
  • Aerodynamics

We’ll decompose peroxide with chicken livers, dissect chicken wings and see chickens in action at the Chook House!

When it comes down to engineering, nature is pretty wonderful. Just to show you how to fly we’ll make some paper planes and put science into action!

Cooking with Kate – Roast Pumpkin and Rosemary Soup

Winter's crisp, chilly days demand heart-warming soups to keep out the cold. A favourite is definitely pumpkin.

Sundays’ cooking session saw kids learn how easy it is to make a really great vegie soup by roasting and caramelising the onions and pumpkin in a little olive oil to add depth to the delicious flavours.

Roast pumpkin was blended in our state-of-the-art Breville blender with rosemary from Aay’s Fresh Herbs and lovely chicken stock kindly provided by The Semaphore Pantry.

Patlin Gardens and Brookman Food Forest have some beautiful pumpkins so choose your favourite variety from their stalls.

Hungry young chefs tucked into a bowl of smooth, golden soup finished with a swirl of Fleurieu Milk cream.

Put a smile on your face and keep out the winter chill! Here’s the recipe for you and your family to rustle up.
